Fixes / Login & access

Grok Bot cannot log into Shopify

What to do when Grok Bot is stuck on Shopify's verification screen. Stop browser retries, use scoped access and prove a read-only workflow first.

Short answerPause repeated Shopify verification attempts. An authorized person can complete a normal login handoff; for recurring work, check an available supported connector or the correct Shopify app authentication route. Then test one known record with read access. A browser challenge, expired API token, and missing scope need different fixes.

What this guide verifies

We checked the linked Grok Bot and Shopify documentation on 5 September 2026. We have not reproduced your login error or tested a live Shopify connection. The sample below describes an expected result, not a recorded test.

Confirm that this is the same problem

Use this fix when all three statements are true:

  • Grok Bot can open Shopify, but the admin login shows a browser check or verification screen.
  • The page returns to the same screen after a retry.
  • The Bot never reaches the Shopify admin.

If Grok Bot reaches the admin but cannot read an order, you probably have a permission or scope problem instead.

Identify the failure before changing access

Symptom Next check
Browser verification repeats before admin opens Pause and let the authorized user complete a normal verification handoff. Record the exact screen if it repeats.
API reports an authentication error Check the installed app, token validity and the authentication route.
API accepts the token but refuses a requested resource Check approved scopes and any protected customer-data requirements.
Recent orders work but an older order is missing Check order age and whether older-order access is approved.

Grok Bot runs on a shared cloud computer, but that alone does not establish the cause of a particular Shopify challenge. Its computer and apps documentation describes human takeover for sensitive login steps. Repeated attempts are not a substitute for completing verification or resolving access with the merchant.

Do not do these two things

  • Do not paste your Shopify owner-session cookies into the Bot's browser. That gives the shared computer your owner session.
  • Do not ask the Bot to bypass the challenge. Even if a workaround succeeds once, it is not a dependable connection.

Set up the Shopify connection

1. Define the first job

Write down one job before choosing permissions. Good first jobs are a fulfilment-exception list, a low-stock report or a draft support reply.

Do not begin with refunds, cancellations, discounts or inventory changes.

2. Identify who can authorize the connection

The merchant or authorized operator must approve the app and its permissions. Check a suitable plugin if it is available in your account. A dedicated Bot role does not isolate its browser session from other Bots under the same Grok Bot user.

3. Create the narrow connection

For a custom app, Shopify documents the Dev Dashboard process: create the app, configure and release a version with the required scopes, install it, then authenticate it.

The client-credentials grant applies when the app and store belong to the same organization. Its access token lasts 24 hours. An app for another merchant needs the appropriate OAuth route. A client secret is not an Admin API access token.

Choose access scopes for the actual query. read_orders normally covers the most recent 60 days; older orders need additional approved read_all_orders access. Inventory and products use different scopes. Protected customer data can require additional approval even when an object scope is granted.

Keep write scopes out of the first test. Store app credentials in protected connection configuration; for a supported Grok Bot credential request, use its secure secret entry. Do not paste secrets into chat or a knowledge file.

4. Replace browser clicks with structured requests

Tell the routine to read the approved Shopify fields through the connection. Require the output to include the Shopify record link, the evidence used and any field it could not verify.

5. Check one read request

Run one test using a known order or product.

Confirm that the Bot:

  • reads the correct store;
  • returns the correct order or inventory record;
  • stays within the requested item;
  • does not change the record;
  • stops after the requested item.

This verifies the sample task's behavior. It does not prove the app cannot read other records authorized by its scopes.

6. Add one write permission only if the workflow needs it

Add write access one routine at a time. Keep refunds, cancellations, discounts and customer messages behind merchant approval.

Copy this first test

Read one Shopify order that I provide through the approved connection. Return the order number, fulfilment status, items, shipping status and source link. Do not edit the order, contact the customer, issue a refund or inspect any other order. If a field is unavailable, mark it unavailable. Stop after the report.

Expected result and failure cases

Illustrative input: recent test order S-031 contains one replacement filter and an unfulfilled status. No tracking number is supplied.

S-031 | Source: supplied order S-031
Item: replacement filter, quantity 1
Fulfilment: unfulfilled
Tracking: unavailable
Next internal action: ask the fulfilment owner to check dispatch status.
No dispatch date promised; no customer message or record change.

With an expired token, expect an authentication failure rather than an invented order summary. With a missing tracking field, expect “unavailable,” not “in transit.” With an older order, check the 60-day access rule before expanding permissions. An empty response alone does not prove the order does not exist.

If part of the job has no API

Keep that step on a human checklist. A predictable weekly click is safer than a routine that repeatedly stalls on a protected screen.
